There Are Three Types of Standard Kitchen Cabinets

Firstly, it’s important to grasp the concept that kitchen cabinets are categorized into three types: base cabinets, wall cabinets, and tall cabinets. Base cabinets are positioned on the floor, while wall cabinets, as the name suggests, are mounted on the walls. Tall cabinets are commonly utilized as pantry cabinets. Each of these cabinet types varies in width and height, specifically tailored to suit standard kitchen layouts effectively.

Base Cabinet

Let’s begin by examining the dimensions of base cabinets, which play a crucial role in providing a sturdy foundation for your countertops. Depending on your design preferences, base cabinets can come with a single door, double doors, a series of drawers, or a combination of both doors and drawers. The standard measurements for a base cabinet are 34.5 inches in height without the countertop and 36 inches in height with the countertop included.

The lower part of the cabinet, known as the toekick portion, rests on the floor and typically measures 4.5 inches.

In the case of a base cabinet with a drawer, the drawer itself is usually around six inches tall, while the door section beneath it measures 24 inches in height. Alternatively, if the base cabinet consists solely of a door, without any drawers, the door height is typically 30 inches tall.

Wall or Upper Kitchen Cabinet

These cabinets don’t need to support as much weight since they won’t have a countertop on them, but they must be properly mounted on the walls to bear the weight of plates and glasses. Wall cabinets are available in a wide range of sizes.

So, what are the standard sizes for wall cabinets? In terms of height, you have the option of 30 inches, 36 inches, or 42 inches. Once installed above the base cabinets, the top of the wall cabinets will be positioned at 84 inches, 90 inches, or 96 inches, respectively. This leaves an 18-inch space between the base cabinets and the wall cabinets (after the countertops).

It may not seem like much, but remember that wall cabinets aren’t as deep, so there isn’t much overhang. Generally, the standard depth for kitchen wall cabinets is 12 inches, but some can go up to 24 inches deep. For example, wall cabinets designed to be installed above a refrigerator will be deeper to align the front of the cabinet with the front of the appliance.

Tall Cabinet

Your tall cabinets serve as the towering elements in your kitchen. They come in various heights, including 84 inches, 90 inches, and 96 inches. To harmonize your tall cabinets with the rest of your kitchen, here’s the recommended combination: the 84-inch high cabinet pairs with the 30-inch wall cabinet, the 90-inch high cabinet pairs with the 36-inch cabinet, and the 96-inch high cabinet matches with the 42-inch wall cabinet. In terms of depth, tall cabinets typically start at 24 inches, but there’s also a 12-inch option available for tighter spaces.

The tall cabinet family includes pantry cabinets and oven cabinets. Pantry cabinets range from 12 inches to 30 inches wide. Oven cabinets, on the other hand, start from 30 inches and go up to 33 inches (with 33 inches being the most common size that accommodates 90% of ovens in the market).

When ordering an oven cabinet, it is crucial to purchase fillers to create the necessary opening for your new oven. Having extra molding can be helpful in case of any mistakes. Most oven cabinets come with a single hole in the center for a single oven, accompanied by three drawers underneath. To fit a double oven, the two drawers need to be removed and the frame modified accordingly.
